For over 18 years, learners around the world have learned a language using the Coffee Break courses. The premise is simple: set aside 15 minutes, pour yourself a cup of coffee (or tea, or your drink of choice!) and enjoy a structured lesson with expert teachers. It's just like going for a coffee with your friend who happens to speak the language you want to learn.
How does Coffee Break Japanese work?
In each lesson of Coffee Break Japanese you'll focus on a different topic and listen to an authentic lesson between our Japanese teacher Chie and her student Mark. Mark is learning along with you, so as he asks questions - very often questions you may have yourself - Chie will answer these and help him build his understanding of the language. You're the "second learner in the room", so you'll learn from this interaction between the teacher and learner.
If you're a visual learner, it makes sense to begin with the video for each lesson, where you'll hear the audio recording and see synchronised slides featuring all the words and phrases taught on the screen of your device.
If you prefer to learn aurally, you can use the audio lesson first. You can master the pronunciation and then consolidate your learning with the video lesson.
You'll also be able to take advantage of the lesson notes which offer additional information, examples and vocabulary.

Frequently asked questions
When does the course start and finish?
We start publishing the lessons of Coffee Break Japanese on 30 January 2025 and lessons will be added every Thursday thereafter. As each lesson is published, you'll be able to access the lesson in the learning system. The full Coffee Break Japanese course is made up of 40 main lessons, and in between each lesson there is a review lesson to help you consolidate what you've learned. Of course, you'll have lifetime access to the course whenever your start and you can work through the materials at your own pace as they become available.
How much Japanese do I need to know to start the course?
Absolutely none! The Coffee Break Japanese course has been created for absolute beginners and you can start learning gradually through the lessons provided. If you're familiar with the European Framework of Reference for language learners, the course begins at the very beginning of A1 level, and through the lessons will move onto A2 level, by the time lesson 40 is reached.
Why does the purchase button link to "Part 1"?
At the time of launch we are continuing to work on the later lessons of the course, but we didn't want you to have to wait until all of the lessons are published before getting started. For this reason, we're dripping out the content on a weekly basis. To make the course as accessible as possible at this stage, we're launching "Part 1" of the course, so lessons 1-20 will be published over the course of 2025. When lesson 21 becomes available we'll launch "Part 2" of the course as a separate product available for purchase to those who have already purchased Part 1.
Which currency can I buy in?
Coffee Break Japanese is available to buy in £GBP and $USD. You can use any credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. If purchased in $USD then PayPal is also available as an option.
Can I download the material for offline use?
We use streaming video for the video episodes in this course, but you can download the lesson notes and store them on your device for handy reference. You can also download the audio files so that you can listen on the go to review what you've learned in the videos. With regard to the videos, shortly after the first lessons are published in the Coffee Break Academy, we will also make the video lessons available in the Coffee Break TV app. These will be available only to those who have purchased the Coffee Break Japanese course, and will not be part of the Coffee Break Club membership.
Is there a free podcast?
The basic audio lessons of Coffee Break Japanese are available as a podcast. Each lesson will be published one week after the lesson becomes available in the Coffee Break Academy. If you purchase the course you will be able to access the audio lessons first in the Coffee Break Academy, and you'll also have access to the videos, lesson notes and review audio materials for each lesson.
