Master Portuguese, one coffee break at a time!

Perhaps you've always wanted to learn Portuguese. Perhaps you dream of visiting Brazil. Perhaps you have a new friend or colleague from Portugal or a partner from Mozambique. Whatever your reason for learning Portuguese, we'll help you reach your goal.

Learning a language is one of the most rewarding ways to spend your time: it opens new doors, lets you discover new cultures and transforms your travel experiences. But becoming a confident user of the language takes time and effort and it's hard to find the time to fit in regular study.

That's why we invented the Coffee Break method...

For over 16 years, learners around the world have learned a language using the Coffee Break courses. The premise is simple: set aside 15 minutes, pour yourself a cup of coffee (or tea, or your drink of choice!) and enjoy a structured lesson with expert teachers. It's just like going for a coffee with your friend who happens to speak the language you want to learn.

Student success stories

"Love the Portuguese course... it's well laid out and progressive. Thank you to all for your great work."

- Anthony

"Currently I am doing your Portuguese language course for a conference in Porto in September, and it helps a lot, especially the comparison between Brazilian and European Portuguese."

- Tesa

"I have enjoyed this a lot. It was the right length of time for me, especially with the break and the cafezinho pause, then the notes and the bonus and notes. The explanation of Portugal accent and terms and Brazil accent and terms is also very clear and helpful."

- Monica

How does Coffee Break Portuguese work?

In each lesson of Coffee Break Portuguese you'll focus on a different topic and listen to an authentic lesson between our Portuguese teacher Rafael and his student Ava. Ava is learning along with you, so as she asks questions - very often questions you may have yourself - Rafael will answer these and help her build her understanding of the language. You're the "second learner in the room", so you'll learn from this interaction between the teacher and learner.

If you're a visual learner, it makes sense to begin with the video for each lesson, where you'll hear the audio recording and see synchronised slides featuring all the words and phrases taught on the screen of your device.

If you prefer to learn aurally, you can use the audio lesson first. You can master the pronunciation and then consolidate your learning with the video lesson.

You'll also be able to take advantage of the lesson notes which offer additional information, examples and vocabulary.

Frequently asked questions

When does the course start and finish?

We start publishing the lessons of Coffee Break Portuguese on 14th March 2023 and lessons will be added every Tuesday thereafter. As each lesson is published, you'll be able to access the lesson in the learning system. Coffee Break Portuguese is made up of 40 main lessons and in between each lesson there is a bonus episode to help you consolidate what you've learned. Of course, you'll have lifetime access to the course whenever your start and you can work through the materials at your own pace as they become available.

Is this Brazilian/European Portuguese?

Portuguese is the official language of nine countries around the world and with Coffee Break Portuguese you will learn to use the language in a way that is understood no matter where you go. Rafael, our main teacher, is from São Paulo in Brazil and so speaks with a São Paulo accent. We're also joined in many lessons by Catarina who is from Portugal and who shares linguistic and cultural information and tips. Similarly, British English sometimes has different words and pronunciation from American English, but speakers of British English and American English can understand one another. And when Rafael and Catarina speak to each other, they understand each other perfectly! The Portuguese you learn in the course will help you communicate wherever you are.

Can I download the material for offline use?

We use streaming video for the video episodes in this course, but you can download the lesson notes and store them on your device for handy reference. You can also download the audio files so that you can listen on the go to review what you've learned in the videos.
